As a listener/counsellor, my role centres on creating a space where someone feels heard, understood, and supported, while also helping them reflect, cope, and make decisions. It’s less about “fixing” problems and more about guiding someone through them with clarity and care. Core responsibilities: 1. Active listening I focus fully on the speaker, both what they say and how they say it. The goal is to help the person feel genuinely understood, not just responded to. 2. Emotional support I provide a non-judgmental and empathetic presence. V 3. Clarifying and exploring Rather than giving immediate advice, I help the person explore their own thoughts: Asking open-ended questions Gently challenging inconsistencies or assumptions Helping them identify patterns, triggers, or underlying issues 4. Guidance When appropriate, I may offer perspective or suggestions 5. Confidentiality and trust I respect privacy and build trust by: Keeping shared information private (within ethical limits) Being consistent and reliable Creating a safe, judgment-free environment 7. Encouraging growth and coping, by: Supporting problem-solving skills Encouraging healthy coping mechanisms Reinforcing strengths and resilience without empty reassurance
